How Renée Uses the High Frequency Device to Clear a Blemish Fast

When I started seeing clients as an esthetician back in 1989, I worked at a salon that used a high-frequency machine. Part of my training was learning how to use it and after seeing the RESULTS it gave, I’ve been a fan of this technology ever since. Back then, it was only used in professional settings and wasn’t a device you could get at home. Now, that’s no longer the case! While at-home devices are often weaker or less effective than their professional counterparts, the high-frequency devices you can buy now are just like the ones used in facial rooms or med spas.

If you get regular breakouts, this device can definitely be a great tool to have in your arsenal. That said, I have to let you know that it might not be for everyone. In this post, I’ll share how I have used the high-frequency machine on my own skin and with clients to help get rid of blemishes fast and potentially prevent new ones from forming — as well as how to avoid damaging your skin.

What is a High-Frequency Machine, and How Does It Work?

The high-frequency machine is an at-home device originally used exclusively by professionals. When used correctly, it can help blemishes go away faster and perhaps prevent new ones from forming.

Fun fact: high-frequency currents were first discovered by Nikola Tesla in the late 1800s. He channeled these currents to produce ozone, which has powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties. This was used to treat infections such as strep throat. Pretty cool, right?

This concept, pioneered by Tesla, is also what makes high frequency effective against acne—an infection caused by P. acnes bacteria. Using small electrical currents, the high-frequency machine gives off ozone (the O3 version of oxygen). Because bacteria can’t survive in an oxygen-rich environment, high frequency can help to eliminate P. acnes and improve breakouts faster. (And that’s what we all want, right?)

Most high-frequency devices come with multiple wand attachments, but I generally only use two of them (more on that later).

Which Color of Light Should I Use?

If you’re using your high-frequency device to treat or prevent blemishes, you must look for one that gives off violet light (also known as argon).

Some devices use orange light (known as neon), but this is used for anti-aging purposes and won’t be effective against acne.

How to Treat a Pimple Using High Frequency (A.k.a. the “Sparking” Method)

The method used to target individual blemishes using high frequency is also called “sparking” (you’ll see why in a minute!). Here are a few important tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your device without damaging your skin.

What kind of pimple should it be used on?

A high-frequency device should ONLY be used on blemishes that are red, painful, and sore to the touch. If you try to use it on clogged pores or the marks left behind by breakouts, you won’t have any luck. It must be used on an active blemish.

In the first half of the video below, I demonstrate the sparking method on a huge, painful chin pimple I had. It started out as a deep cyst but by the time I filmed this video, it was starting to surface as a whitehead. I was also faithfully using my Anti Bump Solution on the blemish every night, which definitely helped cut the healing time in half.

The method—how to “spark”

  1. Start with clean skin and choose the smallest, rounded attachment. This attachment is small and can really put the focus on a blemish and not the skin around it.
  2. Apply a water-based conducting gel, like Skin Correcting Serum, over the blemish. (Some people like to use liquid toners or even just water, but I prefer a gel-type consistency since it does a better job of coating the skin and doesn’t evaporate.)
  3. Turn the device up to about ¾ strength. Turning it up too high is too aggressive. (A little goes a long way.)
  4. Place it directly over the blemish, making contact with the skin. You can feel it “zapping” you, like a quick shock but it’s not really painful.
    • Hold the device in place on the active blemish for 3 seconds
    • Release for one second
  5. Repeat this process 4 times (the device should make contact with your skin for 12 seconds total)
  6. Do this once a day until the blemish is no longer sore. I also apply Anti Bump Solution nightly until the blemish is no longer red.

The biggest mistakes people make when using high frequency

The sparking method should only be used on a pimple ONCE a day. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the high-frequency device actually emits a little bit of UV light. It’s important to know that UV light triggers discoloration by overstimulating pigment cells. This means that it could make post-blemish marks worse by keeping fussy pigment cells active. It’s so important not to use this device more often than directed. Otherwise, you risk skin discoloration which is not in line with achieving clear, even-toned skin.

Another way to avoid inadvertently damaging your skin is to stop “sparking” a blemish once it’s no longer sore to the touch. After it’s past this stage, I believe the device will do more harm than good because the truth is, a blemish will generally last or 5-7 days but the discolored mark leftover can linger for weeks or months.

How to Prevent Breakouts Using High Frequency

In addition to using the high-frequency device to clear individual blemishes, you can use it to potentially help prevent new ones from forming.

The Method

  1. Start with clean skin and select the flat “mushroom” head attachment.
  2. Apply your conducting gel all over the face or just to the areas you’re treating (for example, a common area for breakouts is the chin and jawline area).
  3. Place the attachment directly onto your skin and gently drag it across the areas you want to treat.
  4. Do this for 3 minutes, and keep the device constantly moving (while in direct contact with the skin) so you don’t linger on one spot.
  5. This should be done once a week. This is NOT a device I recommend for daily use for prevention.

*Note: If you’ve already used the “sparking” method on an individual blemish that day, avoid the area. You don’t want to go over it twice in one day!

Is There Anyone Who Should Not Use High Frequency For Breakouts?

Yes. While this device can be really effective, it could also be negatively affecting the skin when used incorrectly or too often. As I mentioned before, it gives off a bit of UV light. This can overstimulate pigment cells and make the dark marks left behind by blemishes worse.

There are two groups of people I would say need to be cautious about using a high-frequency device:

  1. Those prone to hyperpigmentation. If the dark marks left behind by acne are a bigger concern for you than acne itself, proceed with caution. This is especially true if you have a deeper skin tone since this makes you more prone to hyperpigmentation which is already an issue or deeper skin tones. This doesn’t mean you need to skip the device altogether, but you will have to be extremely diligent about using it correctly. You might also consider getting it done by a trained professional (like an esthetician) to minimize risk. That said, if you choose not to use this device, that’s fine too! There are plenty of other ways to treat blemishes.
  2. Those who over fixate. If you get overzealous about skincare and have a hard time controlling behaviors like skin picking (the more is better attitude!), this device may not be for you. Trust me when I say, more is NOT better and if you don’t trust yourself to use the device as directed, you’re better off skipping this one.

Why You Should NEVER Use High Frequency With an Alcohol-Based Product

Years ago, I worked with an esthetician who applied an alcohol-based toner to a client’s skin before using high frequency on them (this was back in the late 80s when alcohol-based toners were super popular). Because the high-frequency device uses an electrical current, it actually lit the alcohol on fire and a flame shot across the client’s skin! Needless to say, if you use a liquid medium for conducting, make sure it’s free of solvent, drying alcohols like SD alcohol 40. There are “good” alcohols like cetyl alcohol that won’t cause a bad reaction.

Lastly, the high-frequency machine really is a great device for acne, but one final thought I’d like to share is that it’s important to manage your expectations. Acne is a disease of the skin for which there is no real known cure, meaning no one thing will be able to get rid of it completely (high frequency included). Remember that managing acne requires a consistent, well-rounded approach! If you’re not sure where to start or want to make sure you’re on the right path, book a virtual consultation with our in-house esthetician to get the best personalized anti-acne routine for you.

I hope you found this information helpful and will follow my expert advice should you choose to purchase one for use at home.

COMMUNITY REVIEW: JUNO & Co. Moonshine Miracle Cream

I am a total makeup geek. I am willing (and honestly, wishing) to try every eyeshadow, blush, cream, you name it, regardless of how many products I already have in my collection. I am that girl. So when the chance to try the JUNO & Co. Moonshine Miracle Cream came about, I was geeking out. Here’s what I thought:

Let’s Take a Look at the Product

According to the JUNO & Co. website, the Moonshine Miracle Cream is “a luxurious, super hydrating, creamy makeup primer that nourishes skin and diminishes imperfections for the perfect canvas before makeup.” I’ve heard this kind of claim from tons of products, so I needed more convincing that this product was worth the $35 price tag (ya girl has bills to pay).

The company also claims that this product is special because of the ingredients used in the formulation. It is “infused with JUNO’s patented sodium hyaluronate and avocado extract which provides 12-hours of moisture for a dewier complexion. It helps to maintain moisture levels to help visibly smooth and plump skin with ultimate hydration. Evens surface so foundation effortlessly glides on and stays put for longer-lasting makeup wear.”

Sodium Hyaluronate

Since I’ve started working at FutureDerm and one of my jobs is to literally read the FD blog, I have been way more interested in the ingredients and products I put on my face and body. I’m not necessarily skeptical or wary enough to turn a product away, (as I’ve said before, I will try all the makeup) but just more interested. So, in true FutureDerm fashion, I wanted to take a closer look at the patented ingredient used that makes this product special.

So, we know that as people, we’re mostly water. This is also true for our skin, and as we age, our skin begins to lose its moisture, causing loss of flexibility and resilience. Sodium hyaluronate is the key molecule involved with skin moisture, and according to the Derm Review, “the most dramatic histochemical change observed in aging skin is the marked disappearance of sodium hyaluronate in the epidermis (the top layer of skin).” By adding this ingredient to skincare it will help to attract moisture to the skin, resulting in a smoother, softer complexion. Pretty cool, but does it work in the Moonshine Miracle Cream?

Personal Use & Opinion

The very first thing I noticed was that the packaging was gorgeous, and I am a sucker for packaging. The jar itself looks like it’s speckled with stars on a dark purple background, and it’s a little heavier, making it feel expensive. The cream itself is thick and luxurious feeling. It’s lightly scented and feels like a really nice moisturizer when you put it on; it reminded me of a mix between E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer and cold cream texture-wise.

When I received this product, I was just getting ready to head out to my vacation at the Grand Canyon, and it was a lifesaver! My poor Pittsburgh skin was not happy about the change from rainy/snowy and cold to dry and cold. I used this alone without makeup the first few times just because my skin was drinking it up in the desert. With makeup, I did feel a difference in how my foundation wore — it went on smoother and didn’t settle in my fine lines as much compared to other primers I’ve tried before. Overall, I was really happy with the product and ecstatic it saved my skin from drying out on my vacation. Timing is everything.

Bottom Line

I love the JUNO & Co. Moonshine Miracle Cream! It’s a luxurious feeling cream that can be used alone as a beautiful moisturizer, or as a primer under any foundation for a smoother look. And it includes proven ingredients like sodium hyaluronate working to retain your skin’s natural moisture to reduce the signs of aging. If you’re in the market for a new primer, this one is definitely worth a try.

Should Avoiding Gluten in Your Diet Also Mean Gluten-Free Skincare?

In the United States, it’s believed that about 1 in 133 people suffer from celiac disease. In addition, Dr. Alessio Fasano, director of the Center for Celiac Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, estimates that non-celiac gluten sensitivity affects an estimated 20 million people.

As public awareness of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity has continued to grow, people have naturally started to wonder whether this is a concern for topical products as well. I know I personally get asked about this by clients and customers, and I’ve been keeping a close eye on this area of research to be able to give the best advice possible.

What is Gluten, and What Does It Have to Do With Skin?

The term gets thrown around a lot these days, but what is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in grains like rye, wheat, millet and barley. In people with celiac disease, this protein causes an overactive immune response that damages the small intestine. For this reason, those with celiac disease will avoid gluten in their diets.

No one is quite sure what causes non-celiac gluten sensitivity. There’s still a lot of research to be done in this field, but one thing is clear: gluten makes some people feel unwell, even if they don’t have celiac disease.

In addition to the obvious intestinal distress gluten causes for some people, it’s been linked to skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and other types of dermatitis. While cutting gluten from your diet isn’t guaranteed to improve these conditions, it’s something more and more doctors are recommending as research into the gut-skin connection continues to grow.

Dermatitis herpetiformis, on the other hand, is a type of especially itchy, blistering, stinging skin rash that occurs specifically in people with celiac disease. It’s caused by the skin reacting to gluten antibodies circulating through your body. Dermatitis herpetiformis can be greatly improved by avoiding gluten in your diet.

Should Those With Celiac Disease or Gluten Sensitivity Use Gluten-Free Skincare?

The short answer? No.

Since “gluten-free” has become a trendy buzzword, some companies have started labeling their skincare products as gluten-free. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, people diagnosed with celiac disease DO NOT need to use gluten-free products. This is because gluten is only absorbed through the GI tract and not through the skin (gluten molecules are too large to penetrate the skin barrier).

Any skin conditions that may be exacerbated or caused by celiac disease (rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis herpetiformis) are due to ORAL consumption of gluten, NOT topical use of skincare products with gluten.

That said, if you have full-blown celiac disease products containing gluten should not be applied to the lips. Care should also be taken around the mouth area (though it’s unlikely you would ingest enough of a product to cause problems). Do keep an eye on how your skin reacts to these products and if you’re ever unsure, talk to your doctor.

Topical Gluten Allergy

The Mayo Clinic also notes that it is technically possible to have a skin reaction to topical products containing gluten, which could be caused by an allergy to wheat or another grain. This isn’t linked to celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, though. It’s technically possible to be allergic to any ingredient and isn’t an issue specific to gluten-containing ingredients. If a reaction like this occurs, see your doctor to help you identify the cause.

Which Skincare Ingredients Contain Gluten?

If you are someone with celiac disease and still prefer to use gluten-free products, the choice is certainly yours! In this case, look for the following ingredients on your skincare labels:

  • Triticum vulgar (wheat)
  • Hordeum vulgar (barley)
  • Avena sativa oat kernel extract (oatmeal)
  • Sodium lauroyl oat amino acids (oats)

Note: In some cases, vitamin E can contain gluten IF it’s derived from wheat germ. That said, the processing of oils such as wheat germ oil should, in fact, remove all starches and proteins. This means wheat germ oil should be gluten-free. If you have a question about vitamin E in a specific product, it’s best to contact the company or manufacturer.

Renée Rouleau Products Containing Gluten

You can find more information on each individual product page, but if you prefer to avoid gluten in your products, avoid the following from my line:

  • Bio Calm Repair Masque
  • Glow Enhancing Creme
  • Purifying Face Wash

These 7 Ingredients Are Guaranteed to Plump and Hydrate Your Skin

Everyone wants plump, bouncy-looking skin, and keeping your skin hydrated is key to achieving this. In this post, I’ll share my seven favorite hydrating ingredients. (Hint: there’s more out there than just the popular and buzzy hyaluronic acid!)

What Are the Benefits of Hydrating Ingredients, and Who Needs Them in Their Routine?

Using hydrating ingredients (especially in serums or toners) is a great, targeted way to deliver water into the skin. Hydrating ingredients should be used by absolutely everyone. Yes, you read that right! Everyone—even if you have oily, breakout-prone skin.

Here’s the thing: skin cells can’t survive without water. This is true regardless of your skin type or how much oil you naturally produce. Hydrating ingredients, like the ones I’ll be talking about in this post, deliver water into the skin. If your skin is dry, meaning you don’t produce much oil, you’ll want to use oil-replenishing ingredients in addition to hydrating ones.

Bottom line, everyone should be incorporating hydration into their skincare routine. Short-term, it plumps the skin, gives you a glow, and softens fine lines (who doesn’t love instant gratification?). Long-term, it keeps your cells functioning properly to support a robust moisture barrier and facilitate healthy skin aging.

P.S. learn why drinking water WON’T hydrate your skin

The Seven Best Hydrating Ingredients for Skin

This all sounds pretty good, right? Without further ado, seven of the best ingredients for happy, hydrated skin.

1. Hyaluronic Acid

Let’s start with one of the most popular and well-known hydrating ingredients out there—hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is something your body produces on its own to keep skin, joints, and connective tissues lubricated. It’s a humectant, meaning it can help plump and hydrate by attracting water from the air as well as from the lower layers of the skin. It then binds this water to cells in the epidermis (outer layer of skin). Hyaluronic acid can hold around 1,000 times its weight in water.

Hyaluronic acid is generally well-tolerated by all skin types, but there is a possible drawback. If you’re using it in a dry environment where there’s little moisture in the air, you run the risk of actually dehydrating your skin more. What happens is this: hyaluronic acid still draws water out of the deeper layers of your skin, but instead of balancing this by pulling water out of the air to “sandwich” the moisture, the water pulled from your skin will evaporate. This is because dry air is greedy and steals moisture anywhere it can.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid so Popular? Is It Better Than Other Ingredients?

Hyaluronic acid has been around for a long time, but it’s really gotten popular in the last few years thanks to the amount of stories like “how to get plump skin” that has been covered by both traditional media and social media. Someone just kind of latched on to hyaluronic acid as the go-to ingredient to talk about and everyone followed. Because of all its buzz and popularity, there’s this perception that hyaluronic acid is THE ingredient when it comes to hydrating your skin. While it undoubtedly does a great job, it gets a disproportionate amount of praise when the reality is there are a lot of great ingredients that provide hydration. Some of them also offer additional benefits and may be a better fit depending on what you’re looking to achieve. As always, in the end, it’s about finding what’s best for your unique skin.

2. Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It acts in a way similar to hyaluronic acid and helps recharge the skin’s moisture levels (also binding up to 1,000 times its weight in water). Sodium hyaluronate is used in products more often than hyaluronic acid because of its ability to penetrate the skin more deeply. It has a smaller mole size than hyaluronic acid, so it can be absorbed more efficiently. Thanks to its salt form, it’s also less likely to oxidize meaning it’s a more stable ingredient than hyaluronic acid.

Sodium hyaluronate is great for repairing a damaged moisture barrier and preventing transepidermal water loss caused by over-exfoliation, dry climate, or sun exposure.

3. Tremella Fuciformis

Tremella fuciformis, also known as silver ear mushroom, is a hydrating polysaccharide extracted from the edible fruit of the Chinese Silver Ear Mushroom. It provides five times the hydration of Hyaluronic Acid (tremella mushroom holds 5000 times its weight in water), making it even more potent.

One of the things I love about this ingredient is that, in addition to being a super effective hydrator, it offers some amazing additional benefits. Although the mechanisms aren’t quite clear, studies have shown that Tremella fuciformis has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it an exceptionally good ingredient for overall anti-aging and healing of the skin. Its immune-boosting properties are exactly why I included it in my Skin Correcting Serum.

4. Trehalose

Of all the ingredients on this list, this one is a personal favorite! Trehalose is an antioxidant found in desert “resurrection” plants. When desert plants dehydrate from lack of water, this molecule takes the place of water within the plant’s cells and acts as a stand-in. Once the dehydrated plant once again comes into contact with water, trehalose absorbs the water. It fills out the plant’s dehydrated cells without any damage to the internal or membrane structures—even if the plant has been dormant for centuries. How cool is that? Imagine harnessing this power for the good of your skin.

When used in skincare formulations, trehalose can help repair dehydrated skin and protect against future moisture loss. This helps improve moisture barrier function in both the short- and long-term. I use Trehalose in my best-selling hydrating masque for this very reason.

5. Panthenol

Panthenol is a B5 provitamin, meaning the body turns it into vitamin B5. It softens the skin and acts as both a humectant and an emollient. What does this mean? It helps skin cells attract moisture and seals that moisture in, all of which help skin cells stay hydrated. This can be really useful in returning the skin’s moisture levels back to normal and improving barrier function.

These barrier-boosting functions also make panthenol a good ingredient for promoting wound-healing.

6. Glycerin

Like hyaluronic acid, glycerin is a humectant that’s been around for a long time. It attracts moisture from the air as well as from the lower layers of the skin to deliver it to the epidermis. This helps hold water between the cells to make the skin feel moist and bouncy. One advantage glycerin has over hyaluronic acid is that it has a smaller molecule size, so it can penetrate the skin more easily. Glycerin is derived from plant oils or the fermentation of sugars, or it can be synthetically produced.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA is the salt form of pyroglutamic acid (an amino acid also known as proline). It occurs naturally in various plants and fruits and is usually derived from one of these sources. Sodium PCA primarily acts as a hydrator thanks to its humectant properties. It doesn’t hold as much water as hyaluronic acid, but the two are often combined in formulas for a powerful hydrating effect overall.

So there you have it, seven of my all-time favorite hydrating ingredients! Each of these ingredients is tolerated well by most skin types, and they can even be combined with one another for really effective hydration. And remember, more isn’t always better. Learn why an ingredient doesn’t need to be high up on an ingredient label to work.

Finally, if you want to improve your skin, here are twenty of the best active ingredients.

Lots of Updates, Featuring Some (Surprise!) Book News & Giveaways Galore

Between working (on work) and hustling together some exciting book launch events (which are going to kick ass and I can’t wait to tell you about them), I’m not sleeping much these days. BUT. I’ve also been working on some kick-ass blog posts about beauty oils and body care routines!  In fact, I was hoping to post them this week, but my plans were foiled. They were foiled, however, for the very best reason, and that reason is that our Korean Beauty Secrets book started shipping 3 WEEKS EARLY!

Korean Beauty Secrets Book

It was insane, actually, as we had absolutely no idea that was going to happen!  We found out about it when people started messaging us on Sunday to tell us their book had just arrived from Amazon. First we did a lot of squealing, and after that we panicked. The original release date was supposed be November 3rd. Coco and I have been working on a companion website, the URL of which is actually in the back of the book. But that website isn’t ready yet because we thought we had a couple more weeks to work on it! So I’ve been in a frenzy since this past Sunday, frantically trying to get the book website ready for prime time. I haven’t showered in a couple of days, I’ve been subsisting on cereal and black cherry seltzer, and sleeping for 8 hours in a row is my new life goal.  This is how the hot dogs are made, you guys!

Korean Beauty Secrets Book

But the good news is: books are shipping! And I finally got a couple of copies of it today, and they look really, really good! Not only is the content great, the actual production is amazing. The binding, the weight, the print quality are all absolutely gorgeous; better than we ever imagined it would be. I’m so proud of this book that I have to restrain myself from shoving it in people’s faces and saying, “Have you seen this? I wrote it. Look at it. I SAID LOOK AT IT!”
